Deepening Dissonance

The world is a song.

The Dissonance is that song bent out of true โ€” and it is not the same everywhere. The further you travel, the deeper the Dissonance runs. Cinderfall is the song with a tremor in it. Meridian Deep is the song a long way from itself. What waits past Meridian is further still.

That is the actual difference between one world and the next. A new world is not "the same fight with bigger numbers on it." It is further from the song โ€” and standing somewhere that far out of true takes something the last world never asked of you.

This page is the why behind the world ladder, Ascension, and the way the fight changes as you go deeper. If you've ever wondered why the game asks you to ascend before pushing on rather than simply letting good gear carry you โ€” this is the answer.

One word, two things

"Dissonance" turns up in two places, and they're related but not the same:

  • The Dissonance โ€” the state of the song, and how far a world sits from true. It deepens as you travel outward, world by world. That's this page.
  • The Dissonance dial โ€” the difficulty number you set. It's how deep you choose to lean into the dissonance of the world you're standing in right now. That's the Dissonance Ladder.

One is where you are. The other is how hard you lean.

Your Avatars answer with resonanceโ€‹

An Avatar doesn't fight the Dissonance with force. It answers it with resonance โ€” an internal note of its own, pitched against the world's.

That note is the real reason a fighter can stand somewhere. Health, Attack, Defense and Speed decide how a fight goes; the note decides whether your fighter can be in that place at all without being pulled apart by it.

And here's the part that matters: your Avatars' note is not fixed. It deepens. Every world you travel, every rung you climb, your fighters are becoming more attuned to a song that runs deeper than anything they've stood in before. You are not collecting numbers. You are getting further in.

Ascension is attunementโ€‹

This is why Ascension is not a stat purchase.

Ascending doesn't buy your fighter a slab of power. It pitches their internal note an octave deeper, so it can hold steady in dissonance that would otherwise tear a shallower note apart. What ascension actually gives you is the ability to be there โ€” and then Essence and gear fill in the room it opened.

That's also why the ladder runs one ascension per world. Each world is a step deeper into the Dissonance, so each world asks for one more octave. They're the same step, told twice: once as a place on the map, once as a note in your fighters.

The rule of thumb this gives you

Tune before you travel. When a new world opens, the move isn't "bring my best gear and hope" โ€” it's attune first, then gear into it. Gear is your primary power once you're standing in the right place. It cannot put you there.

The Crushing Blow โ€” what being out of tune feels likeโ€‹

When you walk into a world pitched too shallow for it, the Dissonance overwhelms you. In-game this is the Crushing Blow, and it is the most important thing on this page to understand correctly, because it is easy to misread as a bug.

It is not that the enemies hit harder. The enemies are exactly what they were. What has changed is that you cannot hold the frequency โ€” the note you're carrying is too shallow for the depth you brought it to, and every blow that lands lands on a fighter who is already being pulled out of true.

Which explains the thing players find most surprising about it:

Gear cannot save you from a Crushing Blow

The Crushing Blow lands after every defence you have โ€” armour, shields, damage reduction, the lot. Stacking more gear does not reduce it. That isn't a punishment; being out of tune is not a gear problem. Every other gap on the ladder closes with better equipment, so the one thing that makes attuning genuinely required has to be the one thing gear can't buy your way past.

Some practical shape, without pretending the exact numbers are settled:

  • Being under-attuned makes a world hit far harder โ€” not a nudge. It is meant to be unmistakable.
  • It gets sharply worse the deeper you set the dial. A deep world's entry is walkable while under-attuned; its Hard and Nightmare bands are not, and the deepest band punishes it hardest of all. Pushing difficulty and pushing depth are two different asks, and they stack.
  • It stops the moment you attune. There's no grind between you and relief and no chipping away at it โ€” the crush eases the instant your note is pitched to the world, because that is the moment you can hold the frequency. Ascend, and the world stops overwhelming you and goes back to being a fight.

That last point is the whole design. Ascension pays off the instant you press it.

Arriving with the deeper worlds โ€” and never reaching backwards

The Crushing Blow belongs to the deeper worlds, arriving with Hollowroot and applying outward from there. Cinderfall, The Stillair and Meridian Deep never crush, at any gap. You travelled those under the old contract and you keep it โ€” nothing you have already earned gets quietly worth less. The crush is a rule about the road ahead, not a revision of the road behind.

What your note learns to do as it deepensโ€‹

Attuning deeper doesn't just let you survive further out. Past a certain depth your resonance starts behaving differently โ€” and each of these is a story beat with a mechanic attached, not a stat line.

Sustain โ€” your note stops decayingโ€‹

Every class in the game runs the same machine underneath: a meter you build by acting, and a spender that empties it. Fluid Form, Soul Shatter, the Wall, Altitude, Momentum, Static, Blessed, Permafrost, Spirited โ€” every one banks up, and every one crashes to nothing when you cash it in. Build, spend, start again from zero.

Sustain is the rung where that stops.

In music, sustain is the pedal that holds a note after your finger leaves the key. Here it means the same thing: your resonance has taken root, and your note no longer fully decays. The spend stops emptying you. A share of it holds โ€” the ward recedes instead of shattering, the altitude doesn't crash all the way to the ground, the charge never quite drains to nothing. Every class gets it in the voice of its own meter, so it reads as your fighter finally holding a note rather than a new bar to manage.

It's the first real proof that the song is inside you, rather than something you have been enduring.

On the road, not on your bar yet

Sustain arrives with Season 4 and Hollowroot โ€” the milestone rung that opens with that world. It's a grant, not a choice: when it lands, every specialization gets its version, no picks to spend and no build to plan around. It isn't live yet, so nothing on your fighters today is missing it.

Reverb โ€” the song answers backโ€‹

Further down the road again is Reverb, and it is the turn the whole arc has been building toward.

Sustain is your note holding. Reverb is the world answering. What you spend comes back off the meter; what you play returns to you off the room. You stop being the only one resonating โ€” the song starts resonating with you.

That is what the deepest attunement in this arc means: you are no longer a thing standing in the Dissonance trying not to be torn by it. You are something the song responds to.

Much further out

Reverb is a later milestone rung, several worlds past Hollowroot, and it isn't designed in full yet. It's here so you can see where the ladder is heading โ€” not because you can plan around it. Read it as the shape of the road, not a feature to expect soon.

How the rungs line upโ€‹

Your specialization's talent tree grows with the ladder โ€” one rung per world โ€” and every third rung is a milestone: the rung that lays down a whole new layer, with the two rungs after it being about how your class bends it. From Sustain onward, a milestone is granted to everyone rather than being a pick.

RungArrives withWhat it is
3CinderfallMilestone โ€” your class identity, the signature that makes your class itself (live)
4 โ€“ 5The Stillair ยท Meridian DeepThe rungs that elaborate that identity (live)
6HollowrootMilestone โ€” Sustain. Your note stops decaying (forthcoming)
7 โ€“ 8The two worlds afterThe rungs that elaborate Sustain (forthcoming)
9Further out againMilestone โ€” Reverb. The song answers back (forthcoming)

So the rhythm is deliberate: a milestone hands you a new verb, and the next two worlds are about learning to speak it. You never meet a bare mechanic with no idea what to do with it.

The arc, in one lineโ€‹

You enter the Dissonance out of tune and it crushes you. You attune, and it stops. You attune deeper, and your note stops fading. You attune deeper still, and the song begins to answer.

Everything on the ladder โ€” every world, every ascension, every rung โ€” is one of those four sentences.

What this means for how you playโ€‹

If you take one practical thing from this page, take this:

  1. When a new world opens, ascend into it. Don't try to gear past the gap โ€” the one thing gear cannot do is put you in tune. See Ascension.
  2. You have to grow before you can attune. An Avatar can only ascend once it has maxed its current Essence bracket, so the rhythm is grow to the cap โ†’ ascend โ†’ grow into the room that opened โ†’ gear up.
  3. Then push the dial. Depth and difficulty are separate asks. Get in tune with the world first; then decide how hard you want to lean into it.
