How combat works

Journey uses the exact same turn-based combat as the Arena — you field a team of 3 and fight through an ATB (active-time) turn order: each fighter fills a turn meter by Speed, and when it's ready it takes a turn. On your fighters' turns you choose the move and target; the enemy team is AI-controlled. Prefer to sit back? Flip on Auto-Battle and your team plays itself using the same role logic below (there's a speed toggle too).

Whether you play it out or auto-battle, the decisions that win a fight are mostly made before it: who's on the team, their roles, their Speed, and the skills each one has learned. This page explains how those choices play out so you can build a team that clears the run — and, when you're driving, pick the right move in the moment.

Turn order

  • Speed decides who goes first. Faster fighters act earlier in the round.
  • The round runs through every living fighter in speed order, then a new round begins.
  • Combat ends when one side has no fighters left standing.

If two fighters are equally fast, the one with less health acts first (so a fighter on the brink can get its move off), with a final coin-flip to break perfect ties.

How a fighter picks its move (on Auto-Battle and for enemies)

When a fighter acts on its own — your team on Auto-Battle, and every enemy or AI defender — it chooses by its role:

When you drive, you can follow or override this logic on each of your turns — but it's still why team composition matters more than raw power. A team of three Strikers with no Mender wins fast fights but melts in long ones; a balanced team grinds through almost anything.

Roles carry innate combat traits

On top of what a fighter's skills do, its role grants a small always-on trait:

  • Anchors have innate plating — every Anchor takes a flat −10% from all incoming damage (hits, AoE, even damage-over-time), applied before shields. It's deliberately modest: it's a role separator, not a wall. An Anchor that also brings sustain — regen, lifesteal, shields, thorns, evasion — is what actually holds a front line; an Anchor with none is meant to be squishy.
  • Some Strikers are "bruisers" with built-in lifesteal. The self-sustaining Striker builds (notably Divine Soldier and Brawler) heal for a slice of the damage they deal on every connecting hit, so they outlast the glass-cannon classes without needing a Mender babysitting them. The skills each fighter brings

Every Avatar fights with its fielded specialization — the full talent-tree kit (a core plus its rung skills) — plus its always-on class passive (the signature class meter engine). There's no loadout to set — every active skill in the spec is available every turn, and every passive is always in effect. When a fighter acts, it uses the best skill it can — and if the best option isn't castable that turn, it falls back to the next one, down to a basic attack.

A skill might not be castable on a given turn for one of two reasons:

  • Cooldown — the skill fired recently and is still recharging (see Skills → Cooldowns).
  • Resource gate — a "spend-it-all" finisher that stays locked until the fighter's class meter reaches a threshold (e.g. a Warlock skill that "Requires 30 Soul Shatter"). Until then it's greyed out and the AI skips it. See Skills → Resource gates.

Which skills each Avatar knows is a build decision made before the run, not something you steer during the fight. A skill can carry one or more of these effects:

You don't manage any of this in the moment — it all plays out from the fighters and skills you brought. Understanding it helps you build better teams: pair a Mender's over-heal into a shield, stack thorns on an Anchor that gets focused, bring multi-hit attackers to a Swarm.

Buffs and debuffs have a ceiling

No stat can be pumped to infinity. Every buff and debuff — yours and the enemy's — is capped at +100% of the fighter's base stat. The most any fighter can raise its Attack, Defense, or Speed with buffs is double its base; stacking the same buff past that does nothing.

It's a deliberate rule, and it cuts both ways. It's why you'll never again face the unkillable wall — an Anchor that piled Defense on itself every turn until nothing could scratch it and the fight ground on forever. And it's why, on your side, layering a fourth Attack buff onto an already-maxed hitter is a wasted turn: once you've hit the ceiling, spend those turns on damage instead.

Your damage, the enemy's HP, and your gear

Two numbers decide every fight, and it's worth knowing which does what.

Your hit lands the same number in every world. An enemy's Defense is a flat, near-zero value — the same in Cinderfall as in Meridian Deep, on every difficulty. Enemies don't get sturdier by wearing thicker armor; they get sturdier by having more health. So the honest damage your attacker rolls connects for the same amount everywhere — the higher-world boss just carries a much bigger health bar to chew through. If it ever felt like "my hits do nothing in the harder world," that's gone: your numbers don't shrink as you climb, the wall is simply taller.

Enemies hit hard — your gear is what keeps you standing. As you climb worlds and difficulty, enemy Attack rises steeply. Two things on your side blunt it: your gear's Defense damps each incoming hit, and your gear's HP soaks whatever gets through. A team geared to its world's tier survives; an under-geared team — wearing the last world's kit into the next one — simply takes more than it can heal through and folds. This is why re-gearing every world (Ashen → Stormswept → Barnacled → …, each band strictly stronger) is the whole game, not a nicety. See Equipment → World-Gear.

The short version: you out-damage an enemy's HP; your gear out-lasts an enemy's Attack. Bring enough Attack to burn the health bar down before their Attack burns yours down.

How long a fair fight should take

Because the difficulty selector's recommended power is honest, the power gap between your team and a node reads directly as how the fight will go — and how long it runs:

  • Team power ≈ node power → a fair fight. A standard node resolves in a handful of rounds; an Elite or the Boss takes longer by design, but still closes out — you trade real blows and win on good play.
  • Well above node power (say +25% or more) → you cruise — the node folds fast.
  • Well below it (the enemy roughly double your power) → you get overwhelmed, often before you can answer.

The tuning target is quick, decisive fights, not grinds. If a standard node is dragging on for dozens of rounds, that's not a close fight you're slowly winning — it's the signal you're under-geared for it, and the anti-stalemate mechanics below will start closing it against you. Come back with the tier's gear (or wind the Dissonance dial down, if you'd raised it) and the same node becomes the handful-of-rounds fight it's meant to be.

"Shred their Defense" is now "make them Vulnerable"

Because enemy Defense is flat, the old skills that used to lower an enemy's Defense were reworked. They now mark the target Vulnerable — it takes +X% more damage from every hit for a few rounds, which amplifies your honest damage directly (Erosion, Whirlpool, Whiteout, Sunder, Hex, Seismic Slam, the frost veils, and more). Your own Defense buffs on allies — an Anchor raising the party's Defense, a Cinder Wall, a Bark Ward — are unchanged and still work exactly as before. See each class page for the reworked skills.

Attunement — the element bonus

When an Avatar's class matches its element's default class, it is Attuned and deals 1.2× damage in every fight. It's a free 20% on offense for building "on-element," so favour Attuned fighters when you can — especially your Strikers, where the multiplier does the most work.

Attuned is about your own fighter, all fight long. Don't confuse it with Type Advantage — the attacker-versus-defender matchup bonus, which depends on who you're hitting. The two are separate layers that stack: an Attuned fighter that also holds a type edge gets both bonuses at once.

Health across a run

HP is not restored between every fight. Within a sprint, your team's HP carries from one node to the next — a mauling on node 2 follows you into node 3 — so the whole four-node stretch is really one endurance test, not four fresh fights.

Your team is topped back up at the checkpoints after nodes 4, 8, and 12, which fully heal you before the next sprint. A loss ends the run. This is why survivability (a Mender, an Anchor, defensive skills) beats glass-cannon damage over a full run: you have to last four nodes on one health bar before relief arrives. Long fights don't last forever

Combat is built to reach a conclusion. The engine actively works against stalemates — the endless, hundreds-of-rounds grinds that happen when both sides can heal or turtle faster than they can kill. A layered set of mechanics makes sure a fight you can't finish becomes a fight you'll lose, not one that loops forever: first the enemy enrages, then it spends its shield-wall as attacks, and if a fight somehow outlasts even those, a hard turn limit ends it for good.

Enemies enrage when a battle drags

Push a fight well past its natural length and the enemy team enrages — it abandons the careful, defensive play and goes for the kill. From that point on:

  • They hit harder and faster. Enrage is a permanent fury: the enemies' Attack and Speed spike for the rest of the fight, so a deadlock tips decisively toward someone going down.
  • They unleash a desperation sweep. An enraged enemy favours a single, sweeping strike that lands on your whole team at once — no more trading chip damage one fighter at a time while your Mender keeps pace. A line you couldn't crack will start cracking you.

This is intentional, and it's a signal, not a punishment: if you're seeing the enrage, your team is under-built for the node. The fix is the same as ever — bring more burst, or come back better geared. The game simply won't let two immovable walls grind to a thousand-round draw.

Shield-walls turn their armor into attacks

A defensive enemy that stacks up a big shield won't just hide behind it. Shield-heavy enemies spend part of that shield as a sweeping attack — trading a slice of their protection to hit your whole team, the same trick the Tectonic Sage's Fissure pulls. So a wall is never only a wall, and "out-turtle them until they give up" is never a plan on its own. Bring enough damage to break the shield before it breaks over you.

The hard turn limit is the final backstop

Enrage and the shield-wall spend are pressure — they tip a stalemate toward a result. Behind them sits a guarantee: every Journey fight has a hard turn limit, and a battle that somehow grinds on past it ends immediately as a loss for you — the enemy lands one unblockable finishing blow that no shield, heal, or invulnerability can stop. It's set far beyond any normal fight (a clean clear ends in a handful of rounds; even a genuine grind resolves through the enrage long before this), so in real play you'll essentially never see it — it exists purely so a perfectly-matched pair of unkillable walls can't loop forever.

If you ever do hit it, the reading is the same as the enrage, only louder: that node was a failed damage check. A fight you can't close in hundreds of turns isn't a fight you were slowly winning — bring more burst or better gear and it won't come close to the limit. (This backstop is a Journey/PvE safeguard; it doesn't touch Arena player-versus-player matches or training-dummy sparring.)

Deterministic and replayable

Combat is resolved on the server from your team, your moves, and a fixed random seed, which means:

  • No hidden luck to fish for. With the same team, the same choices, and the same enemy, a fight always resolves the same way.
  • Every battle has a turn-by-turn replay you can watch — health bars, effects, the lot.
  • On Auto-Battle and Sweep, the outcome is fully determined by the team you bring; when you drive, your in-fight choices are part of it too.
