Essence Upgrades

Essence is a currency you spend to raise an Avatar's Essence Tier. Each tier raises the Avatar's stat budget — the pool the game spreads across Health, Attack, Defense, and Speed. It's the steady, grind-friendly way to grow a fighter you like.

The decision this page helps with: how far up the ladder to push, and when. Early tiers are cheap and fast; late tiers cost 10× as much for the same +25.

The Essence ladder — bracketed by Ascension

Every Avatar mints at Tier 0. Essence tiers run as one continuous counter up to Tier 50, each adding +25 to the stat budget — from 250 at mint to 1,500 at Tier 50. Each +25 is one upgrade cook.

But you can't climb the whole ladder at once: the tier ceiling is gated by the Avatar's Ascension stage. Each stage unlocks a 10-tier bracket, and you must max the current bracket before you can ascend to open the next one:

Ascension stageEssence tiers you can reachStat budget at the top of the bracket
Stage 1 (mint)0 → 10500
Stage 210 → 20750
Stage 320 → 301,000
Stage 430 → 401,250
Stage 5 (max)40 → 501,500

So a freshly minted Stage-1 Avatar is capped at Tier 10 until you ascend it; ascending to Stage 2 raises the cap to Tier 20, and so on up to Tier 50 at Stage 5.

What an upgrade costs

The Essence cost rises as you climb — later tiers cost more, and the cost keeps scaling across every bracket:

Cost to reach the next tier = 10 × (current tier + 1)

UpgradeEssence
Tier 0 → 110
Tier 1 → 220
Tier 9 → 10100
Tier 10 → 11110
Tier 39 → 40400
Tier 49 → 50500

Maxing the first bracket (Tiers 0 → 10) costs 550 Essence; each higher bracket costs more than the one below it.

How an upgrade happens

  • An upgrade is a quick (~1-minute) Kitchen cook — it needs a free cooking slot, and the tier only bumps when you claim the finished cook.
  • Only one upgrade cook per Avatar can run at a time.
Manual stat allocation is coming

A stat-allocation panel — where you distribute each tier's +25 across Health / Attack / Defense / Speed yourself — is in limited testing and not live for everyone yet. For now, the extra budget is applied for you. Don't plan around hand-allocating stats until the panel opens.

Where Essence comes from

  • Your starter grant. The first time you finish the new-player onboarding you're granted 105 Avatar Essence — a one-time seed, enough to forge your starter team of three (25 Essence each) with a little left over for a demo upgrade cook. This is where a brand-new player's first fighters come from: the Essence funds the Forge.
  • The Journey. First-clears, chapter/sprint completions, and sweeps pay Essence.
  • Discord loot drops, essence-synthesis cooks, and events.

About Essence

Essence is a fungible, non-transferable, off-chain balance — you earn it and spend it, but you can't trade it. It fuels forging new Avatars (25 Essence each), Essence upgrades (this page), cooking Glyphs, and the Ascension capstones, so budget it across everything you want to grow.
